He came to WA as a group settler before 1925.

"Unfortunately I was unable to find any records relating to your grandparents in the Electoral Rolls or Naturalization records......I am unable to conduct a further search on your behalf without details of the ship on which they arrived and their date of arrival." Ref: Letter from Australian Archives, East Vic. Park, WA,AUS dated 27 Sept 1993.

Richard's first job was helping the man put out the street gas lamps. He first met Margaret (Peg) when he was just 14 and delivered groceries to Ciss HENDREN [Margaret McTEAR's sister]. Margaret was 15 at the time. After finishing school at Govan Parish Public School (he was a student there on 31 Oct 1908) he joined a collier as a cabin boy and the first his mother knew where he was came with a postcard from Canada. He joined the Navy as a boy telephaphist and sailed down the Clyde on his 16th birthday. Official (Denonport) No. J33256 Royal Navy Port Division, Usual place of residence, 4 Broomloan Road, Govan Glascow, Scotland. From his records we know he was a Ships steward (group 2), his religion was Methodist and he had volunteered for 12 years.

During the first world war he was a "sparks" on mine sweeper 534 and they helped clear the mines from the Dardenells prior to the landing at Gallipolli. After the war he joined the Glascow Tramways and later the Glascow Police Force. Richard and Margaret married at 1159 Govan Rd in the Wesleyan-Methodist Church.

Richard came to WA as a group settler and became a member of the WA Police force. He was stationed in Perth, Fremantle, Northam, Nannup and Mullewa. He resigned in 1937 after 9 yrs. He was a member of the WA Police Federation Union Executive Council (Centenary year 1929) In 1941 joined the Australian C.M.F. on 23 May and was discharged on 2 Aug 1944. 1944 saw him employed by the Department of Civil Aviation from 1944-1963. Lived at Newburn Rd., Queens Park, Perth WA. He was then a radio operator.

Richard died 23 Jan 1995, Geraldton, WA, AUS, buried: Jan 1995, Geraldton, WA, AUS. !BIRTH: Birth Certificate; Sussex, WA Register District; Registration Number 164/25 Marrage Certificate; dated 26 April 1952 states that Richard Mathieson FORD lived at Newburn Rd Qeens Park, Perth WA and was Airman at time of marriage to Valma May Ruth Knight who lived at 11 Market Street South Perth and was a photographic worker.(kodak) Ruth's father Hubert Knight was a engineer and Richard's father was a radio operator.

Dick was born in Busselton WA of Scot parents. Educated at East Fremantle, Northam, Mullawa and Nannup. He finished school at Nannup in 1940. He joined the Royal Australian Air Force in 1943 at 18 and spent nearly 17 years as a Telegraphist, Radio Operator, Radio Mechanic, Telegraphist Technician, Telecommunication Technician and Cypher Assistant (in fact all forms of signals except the switchboard) and attained the rank of Sergeant.

Dick and Ruth married on 26 Apr 1952. Dick lived at Newburn Rd, Queens Park, Perth WA and Ruth lived at 11 Market St, South Perth WA. The wedding was witnessed by Noel KNIGHT [Ruth's older brother] and Cynthia FORD [Dick's sister]. Onslow 1952, and Pearce 1952--1960. Dick was discharged on 23 Sept 1960. On 5 Dec 1960 Dick joined the Dept of Aviation as a Radio Operator, Flight Service Officer, Dept of Civil Aviation [later called Dept of Transport, Air Service Division]. Based at Perth 1960-1962, Melbourne(Training School) 1962, Wyndham 1962-1964, Geradton 1965-1972, Port Hedland 1972-1974, Perth 1974-1977, Port Hedland 1977-1979, Geraldton 1979 - where he retired on 4 Dec 1987. Bought 100 Fitzgerald St, Geraldton but soon sold it. The back yard had a disused well. Bought a house in Geraldton where they lived until Dick's death. Ruth continued to live at the same address until her death in 2010.
