the 'Palestine'

The 'Palestine' is a 467 ton barque built in 1834 in Newcastle, ENG. The ship was sheathed in yellow metal in 1852. Owned by Sim and Co. of London it was constructed in 1834 in Newcastle. Some repairs were carried out in 1843 and repairs to damage were carried out in 1852.

This ship is not to be confused with the 415 ton barque 'Palestine' built for J Hall in 1834 in Howden. That 'Palestine' was registered in South Shield.

The information contained in this page has come from several sources, most of which were poorly photocopied and therefore hard to read.

NB: Check the original sources!

There are and will be errors in this page - do not use it as your only source of reference, rather as a stepping stone to the firmer source materials. Make sure you go to the original source and check each entry yourself.

I cannot stress this enough - my sources were BADLY photocopied sheets and I often GUESSED/ASSUMED the spelling and/or word. To assist you I have added, in hyperlinked superscript, the reference number next to each piece of information

The Palestine sailed from Plymouth, England on 29 November 1852 heading for Perth, Western Australia It had an eventful trip with 12 deaths and six births prior to arriving on 28 April 1853.1
